ABOUT
Diane Eckland landed in Chapel Hill in 1963 when her father accepted a professorship at the University of North Carolina.
Her carpentry career began at the early age of seventeen. Some years later, as a master carpenter, Shade Tree Construction was born.
For over thirty years, Diane has renovated and restored hundreds of homes. Diane is often found wandering through current project homes “meditating” on what the space needs, what will make the house a home and what the home needs to up fit it to today’s comfort while maintaining yesterday’s character.

“It’s about building relationships with the clients, craftsmen, employees and sub-contractors,” explains Diane. Many of these folks have worked with Diane and Shade Tree for more than thirty years. Having worked side by side for decades, each understands, emulates and identifies with the attention, passion and pride that goes into each project.
